Update

*peers around blog, looking for any visitors*

Greetings, dearest blog followers! My apologies for deserting you. *sniffle* I missed all of you, but the last couple of months were quite busy as I fought off ninjas, dragons, and flying monkeys. What? You don't believe my battle stories? Be that way. We'll see who comes to your rescue when a horde of ninjas, dragons, and flying monkeys beset you. I was also battling finals and essays. All in the day's work of a nerd ninja. *flexes nerd muscles*

Anywho, I intend to resume blogging regularly, at least the best that I can, and I decided the best return would be to update you guys on what's been going on lately.

Soooo . . . on the news front:
1. After this week, I will no longer be employed in the cafeteria. I am transferring to the college writing center in which I will read other students' essays and help them revise their work. This was the job I wanted and I was shocked when I ended up getting it after only one semester. Anyway, I will miss my friends in the cafeteria, but I am looking forward to working with fellow nerds in the writing center.

2. I have a new roommate. You know how movies about college always portray new roommates as being best friends forever or as mortal enemies? Well, they leave out a third category of roommate: the one in which both of you have nothing in common and ignore each other the whole semester. This happened with my last roommate. It was nothing personal--we never fought or anything--but we just did not click. My new roommate is my former next door neighbor, soon-to-be-former cafeteria coworker, and current nerdy friend. We're not nerd twins like dear Feathery and I are--my roommate's a computer science major--but we're both quirky, socially awkward introverts who have a lot in common plus our own individual interests, and I think that's why we get along so well. I have a feeling that Elizabeth, my new roomie, will be figuring into a lot of my subsequent blog posts because we have a tendency to have nerdy adventures together. I figured I'd go ahead and introduce her. :D

3. Next semester I am taking five English classes and one general ed class. I hope this courseload does not kill me. At least I will have lots of reading material . . . :D

4. I am now an official member of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honors society. *nerd dance* I also heard rumors that I might be the club secretary next semester, but I haven't heard anything official. ^^

So . . . What have you guys been up to lately? :D

  1. I'm glad you found a roommate that you will get along with. I am hoping that the roommate I end up with next year will like me. I may be rooming with my brother's girlfriend who is also my friend but that's not official yet.

Wow, 5 English classes. Sounds like a hard working heaven. :) I can't wait to only take English classes in college. What is your other gen ed class?

You should also blog about the essays that you will be reviewing in the Writing Center. Like what the common mistakes are and such.
    That'd be really cool. :)

  2. Yeah, I was relieved, too. It was weird sharing a room with a stranger for four months, especially seeing as we stayed strangers with each other the whole time. I hope you get a good roommate! :)

I am going to a private Presbyterian school, so I have to take a Bible Survery class. I wouldn't have to take it if I had taken Old Testament Survey and New Testament Survey at my old college, but silly me only took one of them . . . :P

That's a great blog post idea! I shall do that after this semester! Thanks! :D

  3. Do you like going to a private Christian school? I've shied away from them in my search of colleges. I decided to go to a state school instead.

Your welcome! :D It's something I want to do someday. But I need to work on my skills. I read some essays that my teacher gave a C on but that I would not have accepted because they were so grandiloquent and such. I can't wait to hear how it goes though. :)

  4. Really? I didn't think it was possible to totally ignore your roommate for a whole semester! Well, I suppose it is possible, but it certainly isn't much fun. Well, at least you're going to have a lot more fun next semester, right? :D

  5. @SweetTart_Girl: I enjoy it, but it's not for everyone. The school I go to is very strict--dress code, zero-tolerance alcohol policy--but that's okay with me because the things that are against the rules are not things I do. But some people do dislike those restrictions. Most of the people I am in school with are pretty nice kids. I do think I got a better general education at the public community college just because I had to take more science, math, English, and elective classes than if I had been here just because of the required religion classes here. But the English and history programs here are great, so that's what matters to me. :D

@Sky: Tis possible but not fun. Fortunately, it's not a problem anymore because we do have fun! :D

  6. Your major is probably the most important thing to look for. :) I am going to a school that is well-known (in my state at least) for their education program. Which is good, since I want to be an English teacher. :)

  7. Yep!

That's good that you found a college with a good program. :) One of my very good friends here is double majoring in English and secondary education, so she can teach English. I think both you and she will do well at it! :)

  8. Thanks! I'm actually really excited about it. I have a tendency to look at my teachers now and critique them so I now what not to do when I become a teacher.

Ugh. My school is full of mediocre teachers. Do you want to know what annoys me the most? I'll tell you anway.

It annoys me so much when teachers complain about students. Seriously? You chose to be a teacher and dealing with students is part of the job. It would be part of the job regardless of what grade level you teach, even college, so just get over it.

I also hate when teachers are too lenient. I have been told by several people that I will be a "scary" teacher.

But I love my subject, and I want to make other's love it as much as I do, so I know that I will be a good, albiet hard, teacher. But that's what students need, someone to push them to thier highest ablility and not make excuses.

Sorry about the long comment. I have some pretty strong feelings about the subject. :D

  9. Hehe Don't feel bad. I have a list, yep, a written list, of all the things that I like that my teachers do and all the things that I dislike that they do.

Yes, I dislike teachers who are too easy. To me, it is insulting, especially when the class is in my major. I don't mind having some classes easier than others--otherwise, I would lose my mind :D--but I hate when the work is insultingly easy. I always see that as a teacher who is either lazy or unfamiliar with the age/maturity level of their students.

  10. That makes me feel so much better. :)

I think there is a good balance. Like teaching the class with a no nonsense mantra but then offering some extra credit oppurtunities. And I do think that students who obviously like/love/are-good-at a subject should be held to higher standards than those who struggle but overall, the class should not be easy. Students do not learn when a class is easy. I could talk about that subject for a very long time.

It is most definitely an insult to a student when a teacher feels the subject needs to be downgraded for them.

I think that the American school system just needs an overhaul. I personally volunteer myself to help with this.

I just hope I don't lose my idealism. Many people tell me I will, but they do not know me. So their opinion is invalid and I refuse to believe them. :)

  11. Yes, I think there should be a balance. Making a class too easy is just as problematic as making it too difficult. I totally agree about the education system needing an overhaul. I think there are a lot of reforms needed in the education system.

I think you'll do well in the education field. I like seeing someone who is enthusiastic about teaching. That makes a huge difference.
